We have put together a visit recap which breaks down the retreat into certain areas, includes real photos and a detailed overview of our day to day experience on the Kirra-Belle Surf Retreat without spoiling anything for when you attend yourself.
Good For
Women who are passionate about learning to surf, advancing their surfing level, understanding surf terminology and technique better.
Overview
Kirra-Belle Surf Retreat was a well put together female only surf retreat that included all the essentials to improve your surfing for those of intermediate level and learn to surf for those who were beginning. Kirra-Belle Olsen was the host of the retreat, she created a safe environment for learning and ensured everyone was aware of the activity options through out the day. There was a comfortable level of free time vs surf time and other optional activities to part take in.
Staff/Service
Kirra-Belle Olsen was a surf coach along with one other surf coach. This meant there was 2 surf coaches and a videographer at all times throughout the surf retreat for 16 girls. The surf coaches had over 20 years of surf knowledge collectively and other team members who would hold stretching and yoga classes to help with recovery between surf sessions. It was a very communal style feel where everyone pitched in to help where needed during casual dinning at each meal.
Accommodation
This retreat was held at the Goolawah Bush & Beach Retreat in Crescent Head NSW which was situated less than 10 minutes from some of the best surf breaks in the area; Race Course, Big Hill, Plomer & Queens. The Cabins were shared with 4-5 beds with bedding on the top level and kitchen, lounge, bathroom and decking on the lower level. Each room included a shared bathroom and girls were roomed with 3-4 people in each cabin with ample space to move about and have your own space and time. The facilities available in the cabins were more than enough given the nature of the retreat and focus on learning to surf we were at the beach at every opportunity we had and meant we were not in our rooms all that much.
Food
Three healthy meals a day are provided by a caterer who brings the food fresh to the accommodation hall where all of the meals are had. The food is a communal experience with all of the women on the retreat enjoying the healthy produce to refuel and replenish after surfing. The food is healthy and filling and of a self-serve nature so you can eat as much or as little as you like and caters to all dietary requirements. Kirra-Belle strives to schedule the food around ideal surf times and everyones appetite and is very fluid in order to ensure everyone makes the most of their day.
Offerings & Activities
Kirra-Belle Surf Retreat really does priorities the surf around everything during the course of the retreat. Kirra-Belle and her team look at the weather, ocean, tides and energy levels of all the women attending and revolve the meal times, other activities, free time and video analysis around this. Outside of the surfing schedule there are things such as stretching, yoga, free time to go into town, beach time swimming and relaxing and of course well needed nap time between surf sessions. The video analysis sessions were informative and allowed us all to look at the areas of our surfing we were improving and areas we could be more aware of to improve in our next session. It was a beneficial exercise and helpful to see yourself on video, and of course good for some laughs with the rest of the group and reminders of all the fun we had in every session.
Facilities
The Goolawah Bush & Beach Retreat is located in Crescent Head NSW around bush land and a short drive to incredible surf beaches. On this retreat the facilities really are all around on offer by nature, but outside of what nature provides, the venue has communal facilities such as a fire pit, a large decking area for yoga and other group work out sessions, large communal area and kitchen.
Attendees
Kirra-Belle Surf retreat attracts women who are eager to learn to surf and improve their surfing. Perfect for solo surfer girls looking to meet other surfer girls or attending with friends or family to form a group of ‘frothers’. The group quickly becomes close and comfortable after rising early for surf sessions, driving around in search for surf and enjoying meals together.
Extra’s
One of the joys of the venue where the retreat is held is that it has limited phone service and no WIFI on the grounds, meaning that you can completely relax without fear of interruption. For those needing to keep in touch with loved ones or in cases of emergency, it is a short drive into Crescent head town where you can find service.
