Chenrezig Institute is a Buddhist retreat and study centre nestled in the hills of the Sunshine Coast hinterland in Queensland, Australia. Established in 1974, the Institute was among the first Tibetan Buddhist centres in the Western World and remains one of the largest. It is a registered charitable organisation affiliated with the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT).
The Institute is home to a Tibetan teacher, a large number of nuns and monks, and a thriving community of students, volunteers and guests. They provide a range of Buddhist and secular programmes through which people’s minds and hearts can be transformed for the benefit of others. Programmes include meditation retreats, teachings on Buddhism, advanced study courses, art classes and workshops on Buddhist psychology and mental well being.

Programmes & Offerings
Chenrezig Institute offers a unique opportunity to visit & stay in a Tibetan Buddhist monastic community. During your stay, you are welcome to participate in our weekly classes, courses or retreats during your stay or simply enjoy the peace atmosphere of the rainforest environment. You don’t need to be Buddhist to come and stay at Chenrezig Institute; but you do need to have an open heart and mind and a commitment to live by the five lay precepts while you are here: no killing, no stealing, no lying, no sexual misconduct, and no intoxicants.
The retreat weekly programme contains:
- Morning Practice – Morning sessions focus on completing practices for blessing your speech to create positive karma, purifying negative karma (prostrations to the 35 Buddhas), strengthening connection to our spiritual teachers and reviewing the stages of the path (Guru Puja). These sessions include both English and chanting of mantras in Tibetan and Sanskrit and typically take one hour.
- Evening Practice – Evening sessions focus on completing practices for strengthening your connection to our spiritual teachers (Lama Tsongkhapa Guru Yoga, Purifying negative karma (Vajrasattva Practice) and protecting from harm and clearing obstacles to practice (Protector Prayers). These sessions include both English and chanting of mantras in Tibetan and Sanskrit and typically take one hour.
- Yoga Practice – Friday mornings are home to the weekly yoga class, supporting participants to move beyond the physical and into a more conscious awakening of energy and wisdom. Feel nurtured and supported as you flow through gentle, well-rounded physical sequences with a focus on real-time experience, to integrate the awake-mind back into the body and breath. Classes are suitable for beginners to advanced students and cater for all fitness levels and abilities with plenty of modifications on offer.
